Cuba!!! It is OK to go!

Havana and the Gardens of the Queen

The best way to help the Cuban people is to travel here. It’s so sad for Cuba to see the new warning from the US State Department to not travel to Cuba. This is politically motivated.  Cuba is open for US travelers. Some news agencies are reporting inaccurate news. The US has said it will not issue visas for Cubans to visit the US, but you can still travel to Cuba and get your Visa at the airport on the way.

Havana is open and working!

Cubans are visibly discouraged with the change of attitude coming from the current US Administration.  The best way to impact change in Cuba is to visit, see the country for yourself, talk with Cubans, spend money supporting small private business owners and show solidarity and compassion.

The sharks, fish & friendly crocodiles are awaiting the divers at the Gardens of the Queen.

The difference is we cannot travel as individuals, but it is OK in groups. We have several American departures with groups. Just ask the dates and we can make this happen!

The Cuban people were just beginning to find hope in the visiting Americans! We can still help and support them!

Diving in Cuba is a great value! We are offering DEMA specials to sweeten the deal!

Overview

Actively explore every day

Hike tropical trails to some of the most Insta-worthy waterfalls on Earth, or venture inland on a lazy bike ride. Join a glass-bottom Zodiac cruise, glide along verdant shorelines on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, then cool off with a dip in a crystal-clear lagoon. If you prefer to stay aboard to read in the stillness of the library or indulge in a massage at the Health Spa, that is equally encouraged. There’s no one-size-fits-all scheduling ever: you choose your activities, activity levels, and staff members to join daily.

Revel in the remarkable undersea experience – Diving and Snorkeling

From the Southern Line and the Pitcairn Islands, both identified as Pristine Seas sites, to fantastic Fakarava, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the South Pacific offers an unparalleled opportunity: to witness intact, vibrantly healthy marine habitats unlike anywhere else on the planet. All of our itineraries take full advantage of this underwater bounty and you’ll have numerous chances to dive, snorkel, and swim among brilliantly-hued coral, playful clownfish, gentle mantas, blacktip reef sharks and much more.

Orion carries complete snorkeling gear (yours for the duration of the voyage) for every guest and scuba gear for 24 divers, plus dive masters to oversee every excursion. And, we travel with an onboard undersea specialist and an ROV which takes video images up to 1,000 feet below the surface, far beyond the range of divers. So you’ll get incomparable, up-close access to the dazzling marine environments and their inhabitants. For those who prefer to stay dry, the addition of a glass-bottom craft to our fleet of Zodiacs provides perfect undersea viewing opportunities without the need to dive or snorkel.

Connect with the Polynesian culture and people

Thanks to the nimbleness of Orion, and the commitment, logistic skills and connections of our staff, we’ll have the peerless opportunity to meet and interact with the friendly and hospitable people who inhabit these remote islands and learn much about their traditional lifestyles. As we sail into a new port we will often be greeted with festive ceremonies native to that particular island. Throughout our itineraries we’ve arranged to visit ancient archeological sites like the many maraes (sacred meeting grounds), explore intricately carved tiki’s, witness traditional dances, and delve into the distinctive cultures for which this part of the world is so well-known.

Maldives: Whale shark by night/research trips – May, 2016 onboard Carpe Novo Explorer

whale shark

A short story that led to these very special trips…
In Huvadhoo Atoll, in the South of the Maldives, whale sharks started showing up at the back of fishing boats at night to feed on the plankton gathered in the bright lights the fishermen were using to attract small fish. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Well, the fishermen didn’t think so since the whale sharks interfered with their fishing. The solution they came up with was brilliant – alert the liveaboard dive boats to the action taking place. So, long story short, liveaboards started putting up lights at the back of the boat to attract these magnificent creatures away from the fisherman. The whale sharks, busy feeding, don’t seem to mind a bit that snorkelers and divers are enjoying this unique chance to be up close and personal with them.

During the special Deep South Trips between Male and Gan during February and March, this activity takes place but, for most boats, only 1 night during the charter as the focus on those trips is on seeing as many different shark species you can see. That’s why it was decided to place Carpe Novo Explorer in Huvadhoo atoll for most of the month of May, 2016 – so we could try a few nights each charter to have this very special encounter.

What can you expect?

A week of Southern Maldives diving/snorkeling aboard Carpe Novo Explorer, a brand new boat and a brand new member of the Explorer Ventures liveaboard Fleet!

Whale Shark Adventure in Huvadhoo! Under the guidance of the Maldives Whale Shark Research team, you will snorkel, swim with and identify as many whale sharks as possible during the evenings then dive this exciting atoll during the day!

Weather permitting, a day trip to Foammulah, below the equator, in hopes of spotting the tiger shark and thresher shark, both of whom frequent this area!

These trips will start or end in GAN with a beautiful manta dive!

These very special trips led by the Maldives Whale Shark Research team will make great memories…whale sharks by night; spectacular diving by day…all from the beautiful and new Carpe Novo Explorer!

When and how much?

May 11-18, 2016 Huvadhoo-Gan

May 18-25, 2016 Gan-Huvadhoo

Pricing starts at $1743 per person plus $6 per person per night Green Tax and round trip domestic air ($400pp).

Fire Sale 15% Off – Swim With Dolphins in the Bahamas

Swim With Dolphins in the Bahamas

This trip offer guests the remarkable opportunity to snorkel, swim and play with the world famous Atlantic spotted dolphins, the most interactive and friendly population of wild dolphins in any ocean on the planet.

It is here, in the shallow waters that edge the Gulfstream, that for thirty years snorkelers have been interacting with an extended pod of friendly dolphins. Over years and generations this pod has shown an unparalleled curiosity and joy in engaging with people, freely approaching swimmers to happily cavort and frolic for as they choose, whether for minutes or for hours. There are no walls, no feeding, no behavioral conditioning or manipulation of any sort: just wild dolphins in their natural environment interacting of their own free will, exactly the way it is meant to be.

But this cruise offers more than “just” the chance to befriend the spotted dolphins. The area of the dolphin grounds is the boundary between the warm indigo depths of the Gulfstream and the crystalline blue shallows of the Little Bahama Bank. The diverse environment offers reefs large and small, drop-offs, wrecks, sand and seagrass beds populated by fish, birds, turtles, rays, sharks, bottlenose dolphins and the spotted dolphins. While our focus is on the dolphins (and we do get opportunities to swim with the bottlenose, too), we enjoy making the most of whatever comes our way!

Scuba diving is an option for guests taking part in this cruise, but guests do not need to be divers to enjoy everything the trip has to offer. The daily schedule is subject to change to best take advantage of the local conditions. Unlike some cruises which can tell you a month in advance exactly where you will be on a Tuesday morning, our thinking is that there is no way to predict whether that will be the best place to be on that day; you will only know when you see it! Our operational philosophy is that our guests are aboard a private yacht with a guide at their service with a decade of experience in the area who is always asking: what is the best thing we can be doing right now?

Our emphasis is on the dolphins: seeking them and interacting with them is our reason for being here. But when a good chance to meet their friends or explore their world comes our way, we will make the most of it, enriching the adventure for all.

WHEN:

  1. June 18 – 25, 2016
  2. July 2 – 9, 2016

WHERE:

Guests fly into/out of the international airport at Freeport, Grand Bahama (airport code FPO). Guests embark/disembark the vessel at the Old Bahama Bay Marina in West End, Grand Bahama, which is approximately 45 minutes from the airport and Freeport/Port Lucaya area hotels. Non-stop flights depart the U.S. from the gateway cities of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Atlanta. Fast ferry service is also available from Fort Lauderdale.

Swimming with dolphins and snorkeling/diving takes place along the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank north of Grand Bahama in an area known as the White Sand Ridge and/or on the Great Bahama Bank around Bimini .
