Samboja Lodge, Balikpapan

Samboja Lodge is a part of Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation. Visitors of the lodge will be able to gain first-hand knowledge on what is required to rebuild a forest and protect its wildlife. The efforts here are to preserve the rainforest and supports the preservation of Bornean orangutans and their habitat.

Samboja lodge has a unique design which is based on local architecture. All walls are made from recycled materials and the details are all hand crafted and produced by locals and Dayak communities around the area. Samboja Lodge is surrounded by abundant vegetation and each room has its own patio or balcony to enjoy the surrounding forest.

Itinerary

Day 1: Balikpapan Airport / Samboja (D)

Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport we will drive for about one hour to reach the Samboja Lodge. If possible, in the late afternoon, we can observe the orang utans around the lodge. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2: Trekking (B/L/D)

After breakfast, we'll start our trekking to observe the orang utans around the lodge, as well as other animals such as the Borneo sunbear. This area is strictly for the orang utans survival foundation which has been developing since 1992 in Borneo. Now the Samboja Lodge has about 210 orang utans that have been released on 6 islands around the lodge. After lunch, we'll drive to Bukit Bangkirai to observe the typical Borneo rainforest, then soft jungle trekking to experience the canopy bridge. If we have enough time, we will continue on a canoe ride on the Sungai Hitam river to see the proboscis monkeys before we go back to the lodge. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 3: Samboja Lodge / Airport (B)

Breakfast at the lodge and free time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before we return to Balikpapan to go directly to the airport for our next destination.
